What is a CGPA calculator?
A CGPA calculator (Cumulative Grade Point Average calculator) is a tool that combines the grade point averages of your individual semesters into a single cumulative score. In Indian universities, each semester you earn a grade point average (GPA) based on your course grades, and you also earn a number of credits for the courses you completed in that semester. This calculator takes the GPA and credits for every semester, weights each GPA by its credits, and divides by the total credits to give your cumulative CGPA on the scale your institution uses — typically out of 10.
It then offers a few common conversions to a percentage, because many employers, competitive exams and postgraduate admissions ask for your score in percentage terms rather than CGPA. The most widely seen conversions are CGPA × 10, the familiar CGPA × 9.5 used by CBSE in some years, and (CGPA − 0.75) × 10 used by a number of universities. Since no single multiplier is standard across India, seeing all three helps you match whichever one the particular application asks for. Everything runs on JavaScript in your browser, so it is instant and completely private.
How to use
- Add a row for each semester in your programme.
- Enter the semester GPA (grade point average) and the total credits for that semester.
- Repeat for every semester, adding more rows as needed.
- Click Calculate CGPA to see your cumulative CGPA, total credits and percentage conversions.
How CGPA is calculated
CGPA = Σ(Semester GPA × Semester credits) ÷ Σ(Total credits) Percentage ×10 = CGPA × 10 Percentage ×9.5 = CGPA × 9.5 Percentage formula = (CGPA − 0.75) × 10
The credit weight is what makes CGPA a cumulative measure — a semester carrying more credits matters more.
Example
With the defaults — a first semester 8.5 GPA across 24 credits and a second semester 8.0 GPA across 24 credits — the cumulative CGPA is 8.25 (weighted points 396 divided by 48 total credits). That converts to 82.50% using ×10, 78.38% using the ×9.5 multiplier, and 75.00% using the (CGPA − 0.75) × 10 formula.
Common use cases
- Placement eligibility: check a required CGPA threshold before applying to a company.
- Scholarship applications: confirm you meet a minimum CGPA or percentage requirement.
- Higher studies admission: convert your CGPA to the percentage many universities ask for.
- Progress tracking: watch how each semester moves your cumulative average.
Pro tips
- Use the credits printed on your transcript: weight matters, so enter real credit values for each semester.
- Match the multiplier to the ask: some institutions want ×9.5, others ×10 — use the one they specify.
- Keep the same credit total: a semester with more credits has a larger effect on your CGPA.
- Check the scale: most Indian universities use 10.0, but confirm you are not on a 4.0 or 8.0 scale.
FAQ
What is CGPA?
CGPA stands for Cumulative Grade Point Average. It is a single average of your grade points across all semesters, weighted by the credits each course carries.
How do I calculate CGPA from semester GPAs?
Multiply each semester GPA by its total credits, add the results, then divide by the total credits. For example, an 8.5 with 24 credits and an 8.0 with 24 credits gives (8.5×24 + 8.0×24) ÷ 48 = 8.25.
How do I convert CGPA to a percentage?
A very common conversion is Percentage = CGPA × 9.5 (the CBSE rule for older graders). A simpler rule is CGPA × 10, while some universities use Percentage = (CGPA − 0.75) × 10.
Is the 9.5 or 10 multiplier official?
Neither is universal. CBSE has used a 9.5 multiplier in some years, but many universities publish their own formula, so it is best to use the one your institution specifies.
What is the difference between GPA and CGPA?
GPA usually refers to one semester or term, while CGPA is the cumulative average across your whole programme. CGPA is the more standard figure on an Indian transcript.
What is the maximum CGPA?
Most Indian universities use a 10.0 scale, so 10.0 is the maximum CGPA. A few institutions use a 4.0 or 8.0 scale, so check your own scheme.
What is a good CGPA?
It depends on your goal. For many placements a CGPA of 7.0 or above is competitive, while higher-value targets and scholarships often look for 8.0 or above.
Are credits and marks different?
Yes. Marks are the raw score out of 100, while credits reflect how much weight a course carries. CGPA weights each course's grade point by its credits.
Can I use this for a programme with more semesters?
Yes. Add one row per semester and enter the GPA and total credits for each. You can use it for 3, 8 or any other number of semesters.
Is this CGPA calculator free?
Yes. It runs entirely in your browser and nothing you enter is uploaded or stored anywhere.
