What is overtime pay?
Overtime pay is the premium you earn for working more than your standard workweek. In the United States, the Fair Labor Standards Act (FLSA) sets the standard workweek at 40 hours. For most hourly, non-exempt employees, every hour beyond 40 in a single workweek must be paid at time and a half — 1.5 times the regular hourly rate. That means a $20-per-hour worker who puts in 10 extra hours earns 10 × $20 × 1.5 = $300 in overtime, not the $200 they would earn at the base rate.
Some employers, contracts and states go further and pay double time (2x) for hours beyond a second threshold. This calculator computes overtime at time-and-a-half by default and lets you switch on a double-time tier. Because it runs entirely in your browser, nothing is uploaded and the math is instant.
How to use
- Enter your hourly rate in dollars.
- Set your regular hours per week (40 is the US standard).
- Enter the total hours you actually worked this week, including overtime.
- Optionally tick the double-time box and set the hours per week it starts after.
- Click Calculate Overtime Pay and read your overtime pay and total weekly pay.
Example
With $20 per hour, a 40-hour standard workweek and 50 hours worked (40 regular + 10 overtime), the calculation is:
Regular pay = 40 x $20 = $800 Overtime pay = 10 x $20 x 1.5 = $300 Total weekly pay = $800 + $300 = $1,100
So you take home $1,100 before taxes, of which $300 is your time-and-a-half premium.
Common use cases
- Checking that a pay stub matches your actual hours worked.
- Budgeting a week whose take-home is larger because of overtime.
- Estimating labor cost before approving extra staff hours.
Pro tips
- Overtime is measured per workweek, not per day — reset hours each week.
- This is gross pay before taxes; federal income tax, FICA and state tax still apply.
- Some states mandate a higher rate; check your local rules if you are non-exempt.
FAQ
What is overtime pay?
Overtime pay is extra pay for hours worked beyond your standard workweek, usually paid at time-and-a-half (1.5x) your regular hourly rate.
How is overtime calculated?
Multiply overtime hours by your hourly rate and then by 1.5. For a $20/hour worker with 10 overtime hours, that is 10 x $20 x 1.5 = $300.
What is the standard 40-hour workweek?
Under US federal law (FLSA) the standard workweek is 40 hours. Most hourly employees are paid time-and-a-half for hours beyond 40.
Is overtime mandatory at 1.5x?
Federal law requires time-and-a-half (1.5x) for hours over 40 in a workweek for eligible hourly employees. Some states require a higher rate.
What is double time?
Double time means 2x your hourly rate. When the double-time option is on, it applies to hours beyond a second, higher threshold in the workweek.
What is the difference between time and a half and double time?
Time and a half (1.5x) covers the first block of overtime hours. Double time (2x) applies only to hours beyond a second, higher threshold.
Does overtime apply to salaried employees?
Not always. Only some salaried (exempt) employees qualify for overtime; the FLSA exempts many executive, professional and administrative roles.
How do I calculate total weekly pay with overtime?
Total pay equals regular pay plus overtime pay. Regular pay is regular hours times rate; overtime pay is overtime hours times rate times 1.5.
Is overtime taxed at a higher rate?
No. Overtime is ordinary income taxed at your normal marginal rate. Only the hours are paid at a premium — the tax rate is unchanged.
