PPF Calculator (India)

Grow a guaranteed, tax-free nest egg: enter your monthly PPF deposit, rate and tenure to see the maturity value, total invested and the pure interest you earn through annual compounding.

What is a PPF calculator?

A PPF calculator (Public Provident Fund calculator) projects how much a Public Provident Fund account will be worth at maturity and how much of that is pure interest. PPF is a government-backed small savings scheme with a fixed 15-year term, offering a guaranteed interest rate that is compounded annually and paid tax-free under the EEE (Exempt-Exempt-Exempt) status. You can deposit as little as ₹500 a month, and up to a maximum of ₹1.5 lakh per financial year, either as a lumpsum or in monthly instalments.

Because the rate is fixed by the Government of India and reviewed quarterly (recently around 7.1%), a PPF is one of the safest long-term savings options in India. This free calculator takes your monthly deposit, an interest rate and a tenure, then compounds the balance each year to show the maturity value, the total amount you invested and the interest earned. It runs entirely on JavaScript in your browser, so you can compare different monthly amounts and tenures instantly — and nothing is uploaded anywhere.

How to use

  1. Enter your monthly contribution (keep it under the ₹1.5 lakh annual ceiling).
  2. Enter the PPF interest rate — the default is the recent 7.1% figure.
  3. Enter the tenure in years (the standard term is 15 years).
  4. Click Calculate PPF to see the maturity value, total invested and interest earned.

How PPF maturity is calculated

Each year: Interest ≈ (Opening balance + Half-year deposits) × Rate
Maturity = Opening balance + Annual deposits + Interest
Interest is compounded annually over the tenure

The balance compounds each year and the interest is credited annually, so the corpus grows faster than a simple savings account. Extending beyond 15 years in blocks of 5 continues to compound the balance.

Example

With the defaults — ₹12,500 a month for 15 years at 7.1% — you deposit ₹22,50,000 in total and earn about ₹16,83,362 in interest, giving a maturity value of roughly ₹39,33,362. Now drop the monthly amount to just ₹500 — the minimum — and over the same 15 years you invest ₹90,000 and the maturity is about ₹1,57,334. The takeaway: small, consistent deposits plus compounding grow much faster than you would expect from the raw contributions alone.

FAQ

What is PPF in India?

PPF (Public Provident Fund) is a government-backed, long-term small savings scheme with a 15-year term. It offers a fixed, tax-free interest rate compounded annually under the EEE (Exempt-Exempt-Exempt) status.

What is the current PPF interest rate?

The PPF rate is set quarterly by the Government of India and has recently been around 7.1% per annum, compounded annually.

How is PPF maturity calculated?

Maturity is calculated by compounding the balance annually. Monthly contributions are added and interest is credited each year on the qualifying balance, and the total at the end is the maturity value.

What is the maximum PPF investment per year?

The maximum deposit is ₹1.5 lakh per financial year, with a minimum of ₹500. Deposits can be made as a lumpsum or in instalments.

Can I extend my PPF after 15 years?

Yes. After the initial 15-year term you can extend the account in blocks of 5 years, with or without further contributions, and continue to earn the prevailing PPF rate.

Is PPF interest taxable?

No. PPF is an EEE instrument, so the interest earned and the maturity amount are tax-free, and deposits qualify for deduction under Section 80C.

Can I withdraw money from PPF before maturity?

Partial withdrawals are allowed from the 7th financial year onwards up to 50% of the balance at the end of the 4th year. Premature closure is generally not permitted except in special cases.

Is this PPF calculator free?

Yes. It runs entirely in your browser and no data is uploaded anywhere.
