Savings Goal Calculator

Turn a goal into a plan. Enter the amount you want to reach, your timeframe and the expected annual return, and this free savings goal calculator tells you the monthly saving needed to get there — along with the total you'll deposit and the growth your returns add. Private, nothing uploaded.

What is a savings goal calculator?

A savings goal calculator works out the monthly amount you need to save to reach a target sum by a set date, given the return you expect your money to earn. It is the reverse of a future-value calculator: instead of asking what your savings grow into, it tells you the deposit required to hit a specific number on schedule.

The calculation uses the future-value-of-an-annuity formula. You provide the target, the number of years and an expected annual return, and the tool converts those into a required monthly deposit, compounding the return at the frequency you choose. It then splits the result so you can see exactly how much you put in from your own pocket, and how much comes from returns — the growth your savings generate over time.

Because a higher expected return means your money grows faster, the required monthly saving falls as the return rises. But higher returns usually come with more risk, so it is wise to choose a realistic rate rather than the most optimistic one. Everything runs on JavaScript in your browser, so nothing is uploaded.

How to use this savings goal calculator

  1. Enter the target amount you want to reach.
  2. Enter the number of years you have to save.
  3. Set a realistic expected annual return.
  4. Choose the compounding frequency (monthly is the default).
  5. Click Calculate Saving to see the required monthly deposit, total invested and growth.

How the monthly saving is calculated

Monthly saving = Target × r ÷ ((1 + r)^n − 1)
r = annual return ÷ 12 ÷ 100,  n = years × 12

Growth is the target minus what you deposit — the return your savings earn.

Example

Say you want ₹10,00,000 in 10 years and expect an 8% annual return, compounded monthly. The calculator shows you need to save about ₹5,466 a month. Over 120 months that is ₹6,55,931 of your own money, and ₹3,44,069 comes from growth — your returns cover about a third of the goal. Now shorten the timeframe to 5 years: the monthly saving jumps to about ₹13,610 and your own money rises sharply, because you have far less time for compounding to help.

Savings Goal Calculator FAQ

How much should I save each month to reach a goal?

Divide the goal into monthly deposits growing at your expected return. The amount depends on your target, the months and the monthly return.

How is the monthly saving calculated?

Payment = Target × r ÷ ((1+r)^n − 1), where r is the monthly return (annual ÷ 12 ÷ 100) and n is the number of months.

Why does a higher return lower my saving?

A higher expected return means your money grows faster, so you need less of your own. But higher-return investments usually carry more risk.

What is a realistic expected return?

A cash deposit might return 4-7%, while diversified equity has historically been higher but varies widely. Choose a rate you can sustain.

Does a longer timeframe help?

Yes. Spreading the goal over more years means smaller monthly deposits and more time for compounding, so each month costs less.

What is future value in savings?

Future value is what a series of deposits grows to at a given return. Your monthly savings compound, so the end balance exceeds what you put in.

Total deposit vs the goal?

Growth is the difference between the target and the total you deposit — the interest or investment return earned over the period.

Where can I invest to reach a goal?

Options include bank deposits, RDs, SIPs in mutual funds, PPF and bonds. Pick the mix that suits your timeframe and risk.

Is this calculator free?

Yes. It runs entirely in your browser with no signup, and your figures are never uploaded anywhere.

Is the expected return guaranteed?

No. The return you enter is an assumption. Actual returns vary, so treat the result as a plan and review it regularly.
