Student Loan Calculator

Estimate your monthly payment, total interest and total paid on a US student loan — then see how adding an extra payment each month shortens the payoff time.

What is a student loan calculator?

A student loan calculator (or student loan payoff calculator) estimates what a US student loan costs each month and in total. It takes your loan balance, your interest rate and your repayment term, then works out a standard fixed monthly payment using an amortization formula. It also adds up the total interest you pay over the life of the loan and the total amount you repay — so you can see what a loan really costs, not just what the sticker price was.

This calculator also accepts an extra monthly payment. Because extra money goes directly toward the principal, it reduces the balance faster, which means less interest accrues and the loan is cleared sooner. Compare your baseline payment with an extra $100 a month and you can literally see how many months (and dollars) you save.

How to use

  1. Enter your student loan balance.
  2. Set your annual interest rate.
  3. Enter your repayment term in years (10 is the standard federal plan).
  4. Optionally add an extra monthly payment.
  5. Click Calculate Loan to see payment, interest and payoff time.

How the payoff is calculated

Payment = P × r / (1 − (1 + r)^−n)
r = monthly rate, n = number of months

Each month the loan accrues interest on the outstanding balance, and your payment is split into interest and principal. Without an extra payment you finish in the original term. Add extra each month and the balance is wiped out earlier, cutting both total interest and the number of payments.

Example

With the defaults — a $30,000 balance at 5.5% over 10 years — your estimated monthly payment is about $326, with roughly $9,070 in total interest and $39,070 repaid in total. Now add an extra $100 per month and the payoff time drops to just over 7 years, cutting the total interest by more than $2,400. That is the value of even a modest additional payment.

FAQ

How is a student loan payment calculated?

Your monthly payment uses a standard amortization formula based on the loan balance, the monthly interest rate and the number of months in the term.

How can I pay off a student loan faster?

Adding an extra payment each month, making biweekly payments or making a lump-sum payment reduces the principal faster and cuts total interest and payoff time.

What is the average student loan interest rate?

Federal rates range widely by loan type and year, often around 4% to 8% for undergraduates. Private rates can be higher or depend on credit.

Does paying more monthly reduce total interest?

Yes. Extra money goes straight to the principal, so a smaller balance accrues less interest over a shorter period.

What is the standard repayment term?

Federal student loans typically use a 10-year standard repayment plan, though income-driven and extended plans use longer terms.

How do interest rates and term affect the payment?

A higher rate raises the monthly payment for the same balance, while a longer term lowers the monthly payment but increases the total interest you pay.

Should I pay extra or invest instead?

If your loan rate is higher than the return you expect from investing, paying down the loan is usually the better guaranteed return.

Is student loan interest tax deductible?

Yes, up to a limit, if you meet income and filing requirements. Check current IRS rules, since it is an adjustment, not a large deduction.

Can I use this calculator for private student loans?

Yes. It works the same way for any fixed-rate amortized balance, though private loans may have variable rates.

Is this student loan calculator free?

Yes. It runs entirely in your browser and no data is uploaded anywhere.
