Who is this final grade calculator for?
A final grade calculator is a practical tool for anyone who wants the score they need on a final exam to land a target grade.
- College students: a final grade calculator for students in weighted courses planning study around a heavy final.
- High school students: the final grade calculator helps learners find the minimum score needed to keep a B or an A.
- Teachers and professors: model a course by showing students what a final is worth.
- Online learners: this final grade calculator for students on self-paced platforms uses only a running grade and final weight.
Required final score table
The table shows the score you need on a final worth 40%.
| Current grade | Want 70% | Want 75% | Want 80% | Want 85% | Want 90% |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| 75% | 62.5% | 75.0% | 87.5% | 100.0% | 100+ (out of reach) |
| 80% | 55.0% | 67.5% | 80.0% | 92.5% | 100+ (out of reach) |
| 85% | 47.5% | 60.0% | 72.5% | 85.0% | 97.5% |
| 90% | 40.0% | 52.5% | 65.0% | 77.5% | 90.0% |
| 95% | 32.5% | 45.0% | 57.5% | 70.0% | 82.5% |
"100+ (out of reach)" means even a perfect final will not hit that target.
What is a final grade calculator?
A final grade calculator answers the question students ask before an exam: what do I need on the final to get the grade I want? It takes three inputs — your current grade, the final's weight, and the grade you want — and solves for the minimum score required on that final exam to reach it.
The math is simple reverse-weighting. Everything you have earned so far counts for the rest of the course, so once that is subtracted from your target, the remainder must come from the final. That leftover is then divided by the final's weight to give the score you need on that one exam. Because the whole calculation runs on JavaScript in your browser, you get an instant, private answer to whether a grade is still in reach, how hard you need to study, and whether a low grade would still leave you on target for the course.
How to use
- Enter your current overall grade, for example 85.
- Enter the final exam weight, for example 40.
- Enter the overall grade you want, for example 90.
- Click Calculate to see the exact score you need, plus your grade on a 100% and a 0%.
How it is calculated
Required final score = (target − current × (1 − finalWeight)) ÷ finalWeight
Where finalWeight is the weight as a decimal (a 40% final becomes 0.4).
Example
Say your current grade is 85, the final is worth 40%, and you want 90. The other 60% of the course holds 85 × 0.6 = 51, leaving 90 − 51 = 39 to come from the final, so 39 ÷ 0.4 = 97.5%. Score a perfect 100 instead and you finish at 85 × 0.6 + 100 × 0.4 = 91%.
Common use cases
- Finals planning: work out the score you need to secure a letter grade.
- Study planning: judge how much a high-weight final deserves.
- What-if modelling: see how a low or high score moves your grade.
- Safety margins: find out whether you can afford a mediocre final.
Pro tips
- Check the final weight: the result changes a lot, so confirm your syllabus.
- Above 100 means unreachable: your target is out of reach, so aim lower.
- Below 0 is a safe spot: you already have enough even with a zero.
- Re-run as grades land: refresh your current grade as marks come in.
