Running Pace Calculator
Enter a distance and a time to get your running pace (min/km or min/mile) and speed (km/h or mph), or set a target pace to predict your finish time. Works for any race, from a 5k to a full marathon, in metric or imperial units.
Who is this running pace calculator for?
This running pace calculator works out your pace, speed and a predicted finish time from a single set of inputs, so you can plan a workout or estimate a race result. It is a guide for anyone who runs or trains.
- Runners: Runners use a running pace calculator to check a training run, set an easy conversational pace, or track whether they are getting faster week by week.
- Marathon and 5k trainers: A marathon pace calculator or 5k pace calculator shows the speed needed to hit a target finish time and the splits to hold during the race.
- Athletes: Athletes use a race pace calculator and a running speed calculator to nail pace for interval sessions and to measure fitness over the same route.
- Fitness apps and trackers: A running time calculator turns a split into a forecast, so a desired pace becomes an achievable goal.

What is running pace?
Running pace is the amount of time it takes you to cover a fixed unit of distance, almost always one kilometre or one mile. It is written as minutes per kilometre (min/km) or minutes per mile (min/mile). If you run 5 km in 30 minutes, your pace is 6:00 per kilometre. Because it is a per-unit measure, pace makes it easy to compare efforts over different distances, and it is the number most runners and training apps quote.
Speed is the other side of the same relationship: where pace is time divided by distance, speed is distance divided by time. A 6:00/km pace equals 10 km/h, because you cover ten kilometres in an hour. You already know a distance and a time from a training run, so this running pace calculator does the division and the unit conversion for you — including miles, min/mile and mph. Everything runs in your browser, so your times never leave your device.
How to use
- Choose your unit system: metric (km, min/km, km/h) or imperial (miles, min/mile, mph).
- Enter your distance and its unit (km or mi).
- Pick what to work out: pace and speed from a time, or a finish time from a pace.
- Enter hours, minutes and seconds, or minutes and seconds per unit for a pace.
- Click Calculate to see your pace, speed and time, then use the copy buttons to share them.
Example
If you run 5 km in 30 minutes, the calculator reports a pace of 6:00/km and a speed of 10.0 km/h. Switching to imperial, 3.1 miles in 25:00 gives a pace of about 8:04/mile and a speed of 7.44 mph. Set a target pace of 6:00/km for a 10 km race and the predicted finish time is 1:00:00.
Common use cases
- Race planning: turn a target finish time into the pace you need to hold.
- Training sessions: set a comfortable easy pace or a hard interval pace.
- Comparing workouts: see whether the same route got faster over time.
- Treadmill and watch settings: convert between km/h, mph and a min/mi or min/km split.
Pro tips
- Measure the distance accurately: a GPS-app distance is more reliable than a guess, and pace depends on it.
- Negative split: aim to run the second half slightly faster than the first.
- Use pace for effort, speed for straight-line progress: on a hilly course your pace tells you the real effort.
- Recheck as you improve: your goal pace should drop as your fitness rises.
FAQ
What is running pace?
Pace is the time it takes to run one unit of distance, usually a kilometre or a mile, written as min/km or min/mile.
How do I calculate running pace?
Divide your running time by your distance. 5 km in 30:00 gives 30 ÷ 5 = 6:00/km.
How do I convert pace to speed?
Speed is the inverse of pace. In metric, km/h = 60 ÷ (min/km). A 6:00/km pace equals 10 km/h.
What is the difference between pace and speed?
Pace is time divided by distance; speed is distance divided by time. Both describe the same effort.
How do I calculate my finish time?
Multiply your target pace by the race distance. 10 km at 5:00/km gives a 50:00 finish.
What is a good running pace for a beginner?
Most beginners run around 6:00-8:00/km or 9:30-13:00/mi. A good pace lets you hold a light conversation.
What is the difference between min/km and min/mile?
A mile is about 1.61 km, so min/mile numbers are roughly 1.6 times the min/km value for the same effort.
How do I use the marathon pace calculator?
Enter your marathon distance and a target time, or set a pace, to see a projected finish time.
How do I use the 5k pace calculator?
Enter 5 km (or 3.1 mi) and your time to see your 5k pace, or set a pace to predict a finish time.
Is this running pace calculator free?
Yes. It runs entirely in your browser and no data is uploaded anywhere.
